Question:
let's say that the rumors of Claremont are true
(and I hope they are because sadly I think his comic
writing has been unreadable for years), who are good
writing candidates for Uncanny and X-Men?
I think that the X titles are especially hard titles to write
because from what I understand they are so editorially
driven. Well both Quesada and Jemas have admitted
that a lot of Marvel's titles are inaccessible and convoluted.
I especially have not had a sense of the X characters
or their motivations for years.
So what's needed is a writer that will give a new perspective
to these characters like Smith, Mack, and Quesada have
done with Daredevil. I think for this reason that Ultimate
X-Men by Mark Millar in December will be the best X
title in years (just as Ultimate Spider-Man is the best Spidey
title in years). The X titles need writers who haven't written
them before. Kind of like Ellis, except his new X stuff is
really just Ellis Lite and nothing that he hasn't done better
in Authority, Planetary, and Transmetro.
Answer:
I think it should be someone with fresh and well thought out ideas (like
Quesada has said - "x-Men are the minority in this universe - they are the
feared etc..., but it doesnt seem like it due to all the titles and
characters")
However, I dont want a writer who doesnt respect the history of the X-Men,
and tries to mould them into what they think is cool. Warren Ellis is a good
writer, however if he did with X-Men, what he did with X-Force, I would not
buy the issues. I feel Ellis was pressured into writing the Counter X books,
as it was just a favour. His results are interesting, but I dont enjoy
X-Force at the moment.
I think Fabian is better now than he was when he wrote X-Men, and I would
like to see him have another go at one of the books or do Gambit again.
I wouldnt like to see Scott Lobdell on the books again. Like Claremont, he's
done enough.
It is a tough call, as there is the factor that the writer doesnt matter, as
X-Men will be at #1 whatever. The art is probably a greater factor in sales
than the writer.
I think a good experienced writer should write Uncanny for a year, and then
prospect writers should write an issue of different titles, and see what the
fans reactions are.
