Question:
People have been talking about what could possibly rejuvenate the comic
industry, and people said that the present-day young kids need to get into
it. But the price of comics--$2- 4 a pop--is stopping them. So a couple of
questions--why do comic books cost so damn much? Is it the glossy paper?
Does anyone want/need the glossy paper? What else drives up the cost of a
comic?
Answer:
-I don't think so. Kids have the cash to buy comics. They're spending their $$
on other entertainment options. This is happening because, IMO, they are not
being raised to be a generation that reads for entertainment.
One reason that comics cost so muchis that artist rates went up during the '90s
boom. Now that the boom is over, the artists are not willing to adjust their
rates accordingly. But, I think you're right. Paper is a significant part of
the price. I don't know about the glossy paper. I don't think they would use
it if it cost that much more.
I don't care for the glossy paper. Give me good old pulp. The mainstream guys
might believe that people want it, though
-That may be part of it. But isn't it true that in every generation kids didn't
like to sit down and read a book. That is unless you were deprived of reading
material or learning how to read (as Blacks were before the Civil War), then
reading is a popular activity for people of all ages. Well, it might be more true
that kids don't read now-a-days cause they have more distractions around them then
in the older days. But then thats also a primary cause that kids don't get comics
anymore, there's a lot more competition for their money. But the cost isn't a
problem. Although if comics were cheaper, I think that might entirce some youth to
get a few comics.
